About the Film
SYNOPSIS
“Edjop” is a biopic about Edgar Jopson, a student activist who lived in Martial Law-era Philippines.
A young man born to privilege, Edjop woke up to the brutal inequalities in his country and embraced the revolution of the times. He led the First Quarter Storm student rallies, demanding the dictator Marcos Sr. step down, and ultimately joined the underground movement.
Edjop, a crucial actor of the Martial Law era, became one of the Marcos’ most wanted men. He was killed by the military in 1982.
The film weaves a present day narrative with the story of Edjop’s eldest daughter, Joyette Jopson, a triathlete who ran the North Marathon in 2019 to become the first Filipina to win one of the toughest races on the planet.
Joyette is apolitical, hates activism, and deeply resents the father she never knew but was raised to believe is a hero.
She struggles to come to terms with his legacy. Looking at the Philippines in the years since his death, it seems as though he sacrificed his life and his family, for nothing.
ABOUT THE FILMMAKER
Katski Flores is a Filipino writer-director-producer whose work moves fluidly between intimate character drama and socially sharp, nationally resonant storytelling.
She made her directorial debut with Still Life (2007), a first feature entry to the 3rd Cinemalaya Film Festival which she wrote, directed, and produced, and has since built a varied career writing for mainstream and independent projects while directing both film and television.
In 2008, she co-founded Origin8media Corp., an independent, artist-run production company. In 2017, she co-created Brgy 143, the first Filipino anime series, a production of Synergy88 and TV Asahi of Japan.
Her most recent work includes the high-profile biopic Edjop, which took a total of 5 years to complete. The film is a major collaboration that has brought together some of the best artists in the local film industry both on and off screen.
Katski’s projects often explore personal memory and political history, marrying meticulous production craft with a deep interest in performance-driven stories.
