September 19 - October 6, 2024

This year, the festival invites its audience to reflect on a future beyond the present by opening discussions through humor, art, and performances—spotlighting regional stories, conducting educational forums, and screening films that encourage viewers to see the world not only as it is but as it could be, as it should be.

FESTIVAL OPENING

September 19, 2024 | 4:00 - 9:00 PM | UPFI Film Center, UP Diliman, Quezon City

The 12th Active Vista Human Rights Festival kicks off with a compelling screening of The Editorial Office by Roman Bondarchuk. This powerful film dives deep into the crucial role the media plays in shaping public opinion and protecting democracy. It confronts the perils of disinformation, the corrosive effects of corruption on institutions, and the vulnerability of human rights under oppressive regimes. With its urgent and timely message, the film prompts us to consider the importance of remaining vigilant in defending our freedoms.

The event also features the unveiling of Silingan Coffee’s new coffee on-the-road van, in collaboration with DAKILA, adorned with a theme of “courageous hope”—a hope grounded in bravery and the reimagining of our society.

VIEWPOINTS

Festival Forums

Active Vista presents Viewpoints, a series of forums and dialogues that complement the thematic film screenings of the festival. Here, issues are presented and dissected through the lens of various perspectives, allowing the audience to participate in dynamic ways of seeing the narratives in the broader societal context and perspectives, and in the moving images that project truths on the important global issues.

FOREFRONTS

Active Vista pays homage to filmmakers and artists who have catalyzed change in the audience’s perspective through their compelling storytelling and artistry. This year, we honor and celebrate the cinema and works of filmmaker and screenwriter Armando ‘Bing’ Lao.

FRAMES

This year’s FRAMES short film competition is focused on discovering and supporting young filmmakers from the Philippines who are deeply committed to human rights. By offering a platform for their films to be displayed at diverse locations nationwide—such as microcinemas, schools, and barangays—the competition aims to promote human rights in alternative forms of cinema and give these emerging voices a significant role in advancing the human rights conversation.

SPOTLIGHT

In this edition of SPOTLIGHT, the festival features a carefully curated selection of Southeast Asian short films. This initiative aims to strengthen regional ties by highlighting both diverse and unifying narratives while fostering collaboration among Southeast Asian nations. By celebrating the region’s rich cultural heritage and promoting crucial conversations on shared human rights issues, SPOTLIGHT seeks to deepen connections and cultivate relationships across Southeast Asia.

SATELLITE

To broaden AV Fest’s reach and surface regional stories that provoke what might emerge from each region’s unique and cultural landscape, Satellite Festivals will take place in seven key areas nationwide: NCR, Laguna, Cebu, Bacolod, Dumaguete, Iloilo, and Cagayan De Oro.
